Eligible presidential candidates get government funds to pay for qualified campaign expenses in both the primary and general elections under the presidential public funding scheme. The public funding program is designed to use taxes to: match the first individual contribution received by an eligible presidential contender during the primary campaign; and fund the general election campaigns of the major party nominees (and assist eligible minor party nominees).
