SDG 11 aims to renew and plan cities and other human settlements in a way that offers opportunities for all, with access to basic services, energy, housing, transportation and green public spaces, while reducing resource use and environmental impact. Decentralized local governance has been mandated with roles such as development of local cities, social amenities such as housing, hospitals, public spaces among others. It has to develop local infrastructure like roads. For example, South Africa has decentralized local governments such as Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, Mangaung Municipality, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality which have helped push SDG's including 11.
