The momentum of an object is p=mvp=mv

dpdt=d(mv)dt\frac{dp}{dt}=\frac{d(mv)}{dt}

=md(v)dt=m\frac{d(v)}{dt}

=mdvdt(dx)dx)=m\frac{dv}{dt}(\frac{dx)}{dx})

=m(dxdt)(dvdx)=mv(dvdx)=m(\frac{dx}{dt})(\frac{dv}{dx}) =mv(\frac{dv}{dx}) since(dxdt)=vsince (\frac{dx}{dt})=v

Therefore,

dpdt=mv(dvdx)\frac{dp}{dt}=mv(\frac{dv}{dx})
