Answer to Question #82443 in Physics for Cartoon

Question #82443
1. A rock is dropped off a cliff of height h. As it falls, a camera takes several
photographs, at random intervals. At each picture, I measure the distance the
rock has fallen. Let the average (expected value) of all of these distances be
K into h. If the number of photographs taken is huge, find K. That is: what is the
time-average of the distance traveled divided by h, dividing by h?

2.Consider an infinitely long, thin, non-conducting wire, along which there is a
uniform line charge density of 20 micro C/m.
One end of a mass less, inextensible thread of length 1m is tied at some point
on this wire; and a particle of mass m, with a charge of 4.83 micro C is tied at the
other end of this thread. The particle is repelled by the charged wire, so that at
equilibrium, the taut thread makes an angle of 45° with the wire.
Use this information to find the mass m of the particle
