According to Newton's first law of motion, an object either stays at rest or keeps moving at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. Collision brings a car to sudden stop. At the same time, bodies of unfastened people inside continue moving, until they are acted upon by a stopping force, exerted by a steering wheel, dashboard, windshield etc. However, if they are fastened, the stopping force will be exerted by the seat belts, causing incomparably smaller damage.
