Question #350319

An improvised billiard ball is used in a local play where a 35 gram billiard ball resting in a corner is suddenly

Given:

v1=0v_1=0

m1=35gm_1=35\:\rm g

v2=0.5m/sv_2=0.5\:\rm m/s

m2=45gm_2=45\:\rm g

v2=0v_2'=0

The law of conservation of momentum says

m1v1+m2v2=m1v1+m2v2m_1v_1+m_2v_2=m_1v_1'+m_2v_2'

Thus

v1=v1+(v2v2)m2/m1v_1'=v_1+(v_2-v_2')m_2/m_1

v1=0+(0.50)45/35=0.64m/sv_1'=0+(0.5-0)45/35=0.64\:\rm m/s
