Question #305774

What changes take place in the atomic structure of an element X with atomic number 88 and mass number 226,if it emits 2 alpha particles

Expert's answer

The atomic number of alpha particle is 2 (Helium), and the mass number is 4. Thus, the  atomic number of element X will be reduced by 4 (since two alpha particle were emited):

884=8488-4 = 84

and the mass number will be reduced by 8:

2268=218226-8 = 218

Answer. Atomic number of the new element is 84, and mass number is 218.
