You go 10 m forward, 10 m backward, 100 m left, 200 m right. The distance is 10+10+100+200=320 m.

You go 10 m forward, 10 m backward, 100 m left, 200 m right. The displacement is 10-10+100-200=-100 m.

Velocity is the speed in a given direction.

Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity.
