Question #135601

Rita has two small containers, one holding a liquid and one holding a gas. Rita transfers the substances to two larger containers. Compare the behavior of the atoms in the liquid to the atoms in the gas after they are moved to the larger containers.

Expert's answer

Basically, nothing will change in liquid. The molecules will move as they did it in the smaller container: they will have the same velocity, the same free path length. On the other hand, the molecules of gas will have greater free path length, higher speed due to smaller concentration in the large container.
