The DO concentration in a small pond was found to be 5.2 mg/L at 7 a.m. (near sunrise), and repeated measurements over the day showed a steadily increasing concentration that reached a maximum of 8.2 mg/L at 7 p.m. (near sunset). The water temperature remained constant at 20◦C over the day. A sample of pond water taken at 7 a.m. and incubated in a dark bottle for 12 h had a DO content of 3.5 mg/L at 7 p.m. (a) Estimate the respiration rate, net and gross primary production of the pond water ignoring possible influence of re-aeration.
