Please explain pulse dispersion in step-index fibre. If the core and cladding refractive indices for a step-index fibre are 1.47 and 1.46 respectively, calculate the broadening of a pulse after a distance of 5 km.

The pulse dispersion in step-index fibre is given by formula

"\u0394=\\frac {(n_1 \u2013 n_2)n_1l}{c} (1)"

where n1 is the refractive index of core,

n2 is is the refractive index of cladding,

l is the length of the optical fiber under observation,

c is the the speed of light in vacuum

Using (1) we got

Δ=2.45×10-7 s
