The point-to-point fiber links with periodic loss compensation through (a) regenerators and (b) optical amplifiers are shown in figure. A regenerator consists of a receiver followed by a transmitter. Compensation is required when the link length exceeds a certain value, depending on the operating wavelength, to prevent the signal from coming too weak to be detected reliably.
