Expert's answer

Answer on Question #44446, Physics, Optics

What color will appear when green light passes through a red glass?

Answer:

No color will be transmitted, it will appear black. This is because a pure red glass only allows through red light.

Red glass absorbs all colors except red.

That means that all the green light gets absorbed.

So therefore no light passes through.

If you pass white light through a red filter, then red light comes out the other side. This is because the red filter only allows red light through. The other colors (wavelengths) of the spectrum are absorbed. Similarly, a green filter only allows green light through. This is called color by subtraction.
