Answer to Question #147025 in Optics for David

Question #147025
You are interested in generating 532nm light, but you only have access to a high power laser whose emission wavelength is 1064nm. You also have access to a non-centrosymmetric birefringent crystal with the following refractive indices at these two frequencies: no(ω) = 1.4938, ne(ω) = 1.4599, no(2ω) = 1.5124, ne(2ω) = 1.4705. Additionally, it is known that for this crystal, the only non zero components of the nonlinear coefficient matrix (so called d−matrix) are d14, d25, d36. You are not allowed to cut or heat up the crystal – you can only rotate it. Find out the correct alignment of this crystal to maximize the second harmonic generation.
(a) Find the orientation of the crystal with respect to the electric field of the incident fundamental wave for maximizing the second harmonic generation efficiency.
(b) Draw a picture showing all the polarization directions, propagation directions of the fundamental and second harmonic waves and the crystal orientation for this set up.
