ΔL=αL0ΔT gives for the expansion of the aluminum
ΔLA=αALAΔT
and the expansion of the brass
ΔLB=αBLBΔT
Taking the coefficients of thermal expansion for aluminum (αA=23×10−6K−1) and brass (αB=19×10−6K−1) adding Equations (1) and (2), and solving for ΔT give:
ΔT=αALA+αBLBΔLA+ΔLB=23×10−6K−1⋅1m+19×10−6K−1⋅2m1.67×10−3m=27∘C
The desired temperature is then
T=27.1∘C+27∘C=54.1∘C
Answer: the gap will be closed at temperature 54.1∘C .
