The man climbs 5 m in one second and slips downwards 3 m in the next second. So the man is effectively climbing 2m in 2 seconds. After 8 seconds of climbing and slipping, the man would reach a height of 8 m. On the 9th second the man will climb the remaining 5m.

Answer: 9 s.
