In the treatment of head-and-neck injury, a
traction system must be used to prevent any
unnecessary movement of the patient’s head or
neck. Such a system is schematically shown in
the figure below. If the maximum static force,
|fs| = 10N in the direction shown; the weight of
the patient, |W| = 490 N down and the normal
force N = 482 N upwards, use vector
addition/subtraction to calculate the tension
force, T (magnitude and direction) needed to
keep the patient’s head and neck fixed.
b) If the patient slipped a distance 50 cm to the left, find the scalar product of the tension
force T and the displacement of the patient, i.e. find T• x.
