A pile of bricks A is placed on a steel girder which is lying on top of a building and sticking out. These bricks have a total weight of 500 N. The girder is marked at regular intervals along its length.
The girder has a point B at the point at the top of the building where it is sticking out which can be taken as the pivot. From this point, the pile of bricks A is placed 4 m away in the right side of the girder.
(a)Calculate the clockwise moment of the pile of bricks A about the point B.
(b)Explain using the principle of moments, why it is not possible to balance the the girder by placing a pile of bricks C of weight 1000 N some distance away from point B on the left side of the point on the portion of the girder lying above the building.
