Question #34598

A jet plane lands with a speed of 96 m/s and can accelerate at a maximum rate of −4.20 m/s2 as it comes to rest.
(a) From the instant the plane touches the runway, what is the minimum time needed before it can come to rest?

Answer on Question #34598 - Physics - Mechanics | Relativity

Task. A jet plane lands with a speed of v0=96 m/sv_{0}=96~{}m/s and can accelerate at a maximum rate of a=4.20 m/s2a=-4.20~{}m/s^{2} as it comes to rest. From the instant the plane touches the runway, what is the minimum time needed before it can come to rest?

Solution. Assume that the plane accelerates with constant rate a=4.20 m/s2a=-4.20~{}m/s^{2}. Then the relation between velocity and time is given by the following formula:

v(t)=v0+at.v(t)=v_{0}+at.

We should find t1t_{1} such that v(t1)=0v(t_{1})=0, so

0=v0+at1,0=v_{0}+at_{1},

whence

t1=v0a.t_{1}=-\frac{v_{0}}{a}.

Substituting values we obtain

t1=v0a=964.2022.9s.t_{1}=-\frac{v_{0}}{a}=-\frac{96}{-4.20}\approx 22.9s.

Answer. 22.9 s.
