The law of inertia states that that objects at rest remain at rest and objects in motion continue in a straight line unless acted upon by a net external force.

1. A ball on a floor of a car is at rest with respect to the vehicle when it moves unaccelerated in a straight line. If the car will break, the ball will continue to move straight forward.

2. A car and a ball are at rest. If the car will start, the ball will move backward on a floor, being stationary in an inertial frame at rest with respect to the ground.
