Newton's law of motion is important because it is the foundation of Mechanics, the study of how objects move or do not move when forces act upon them. For example, Newton's third law states that when two bodies interact, they apply forces to one another that are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. This helps us to understand that, a book resting on a table applies a downward force equal to its weight on the table, when you sit in your chair, your body exerts a downward force on the chair and the chair exerts an upward force on your body.
