The coefficient of kinetic (sliding) friction can be found by the following experiment:. Take a piece of wood and put it on a horizontal flat metal plate. The attach spring scales to the wood and start pulling it horizontally so that the motion is uniform (without jerks and changes of speed). You'll find out that the spring extends. The coefficient of kinetic friction can be found by dividing the force obtained on the scales f by the mass and acceleration due to gravity:

"\\mu_k=\\frac{f}{mg}."
