Explanation
There are different types of washing machines but the basic principle is the same to be the action of the centrifugal force which is applied on cloths during the whole process.
Detergents & other soapy substances removes the dirt as its their intended action while the washer eases the removal process by circulating water in an pattern with the speeded rotation which is the same thing done by the hand during the hand wash.
As the drum rotates at the designed speeds, so the cloths & water (+ detergents) follow, which subject them to a centrifugal force.
Water moves through the cloths due to this, which takes the dissolved dirt (due to detergents) out of the cloths.
During the wash & rinse cycles, cloths are washed thoroughly with water by this action & excess water is just removed during the spin cycle by this action.
The process of removing matter (of different densities) by the application of a centrifugal force is called "Centrifugation"
