It is the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of, or even opposition to external forces like gravity. It occurs because of inter-molecular forces between the liquid and surrounding solid surfaces. It can be seen in drawing up of liquid in a thin tube, between the hairs of a paint-brush, in narrow materials such as paper and plastic, in some non-porous materials such as sand or liquefied carbon fiber, or in a biological cell.
