From the several popular measuring instruments —meter ruler, Vernier caliper, micrometer screw guage, deviders etc — the Vernier caliper is the most suitable.
A measurement can easily be taken using the internal jaws of it while the accuracy could be increased by calculating an average value for a set of measurements taken at different locations.
To compensate the errors of a single vernier caliper, another one could be used along with it.
To compensate human errors in reading the measurements, a digital vernier caliper could be used.
