Answer Suppose that a bar magnet is suspended fromits center by a string so that it can swing freely in a horizontal plane. If the south pole of a second bar magnet is brought near the south pole of the first one, there will be a force of repulsion between these poles. The suspended magnet will move so that its south pole goes away from the south pole of the approaching magnet. On the other hand, there will be a force ofattraction when the south pole of one magnet approaches the north pole of the other one.
