System software can be compared to a "connector" between a processor, keyboard, mouse, RAM, on the one hand, and application software on the other. The system software controls what has been listed above and does not solve any problems users may have (such as running simulations, computations etc.) and that is the key difference with the application software.

Application software is a program intended to solve users' problems (arrange data, draw figures for instance). All users may have direct control over the application software functions and that is one of key differences with system software.

System software is like a workshop with tables and grip vice or holdfast, (operating system) where you can work. However to do what you want there you need application software or instruments in this workshop - saw, screwdriver, drill (web browser, videoplayer, PDF reader).
