If the polythene rod is attracted then there are two conclusion: 1. Polythene rod is positively charged. Object with opposite charges attracts. 2. Polythene rod is uncharged. In this case, polarization of polythene lead to a small positive charge appearance on the side that closer to the negatively charged rod. And this positive charge attracted to the negative.
