The algebraic sum of all voltages around any closed loop in a circuit is equal to zero.
Therefore the algebraic sum of all positive voltages should be equal to algebraic sum of all negative voltages.
This implies that, when negative potential increases in a closed circuit then the positive potential in the same closed circuit increases such that their absolute values are equal.
