We know, the relationship is,

F=kxF=kx

Now, as xx increases for constant value of kk , FF will also increase. But we don't want it. We want a constant FF value for all the values of xx . So with increasing xx , we have to decrease k with such a value so that the multiplication of kk and xx (i.e, k×x=Fk×x=F ) remain constant. So with increasing xx , we have to decrease the value of kk with the stretch.

kk must vary inversely with stretch.
