Question #79819

As Boron absorbs neutron, what happens then to Boron? Does it become excited or something else happens?

Expert's answer

As Boron absorbs neutron, what happens then to Boron? Does it become excited or something else happens?
10B + n → 11B* → α + 7Li + 2.31 MeV
At first stage, we obtain excited 11B*. It quickly decays to a 7Li and α-particle with energy of 2.31 MeV. No γ-quants are emitted.
