Rigid rotator is used to describe the rotational energy of diatonic molecules but it is not completely accurate description of such molecules and this is because molecular bonds are not completely fixed whiles the non rigid rotator is a combination of two atoms in which after rotation the distance between two molecules changes. Spectra for rigid is when the rotational spectra arise due to transistion of molecules which allow rotational energy levels.
