Hydrogen fusion, often called the proton-proton chain, combines hydrogen nuclei into helium ones inside the sun. There are two zones with different types of energy transport: the radiative zone and the convective one. In addition to producing light in the form of gamma-rays, other particles such as neutrinos are produced.

Photosphere is the visible surface of the sun. The energy emitted from the photosphere then propagates through space and reaches Earth's atmosphere and the other planets of the solar system. The upper layer of the atmosphere (the ozone layer) filters much of the sun's ultra-violet radiation, but passes some onto the surface.
