There are three types of radiation: alpha, beta and gamma. 1) Alpha radiation is the fast moving helium atoms. It can be stopped, for example, by just a few inches of air or a piece of paper. 2) Beta radiation is the fast moving electrons. It can be stopped, for example, by several millimeters of plastic or by a sheet of aluminium. 3) Gamma radiation is a very high frequency electromagnetic radiation (photons). It can be stopped, for example, by a concrete or several inches of lead.
