In astronomy, a lot is based on observation, so it plays a decisive role. Without observation, astronomy could not develop as a science. The most important tool for this is the telescope. Telescopes come in different types and designs, but their functions are similar. Photometers are also used (to determine the intensity of the brilliance of a star), thermoelements (to measure the temperature of celestial bodies), spectrographs (to study the electromagnetic spectrum).
