In what way can the philosophy of ubuntu be adapted for use in the ECD playroom?
Ubuntu is a philosophy based on the idea that all humanity is connected. The thinking originates in southern Africa but forms part of many African belief systems and serves as a foundation for education. With ubuntu, the relationship between a person and her/his community is interdependent and mutually beneficial. Such experiences could enhance learning during classroom interactions. The present study is based on the experiences of the author, focuses on the application of Ubuntu (sharing, love, respect, cooperation, and support) as a teaching strategy to elicit experiences, support, and cooperation among learners. The Ubuntu philosophy implies that the teacher looks at whether what they are doing enables or empowers the students to help improve them. It means that if students are treated well and seen the same way, they are likely to perform better.
