The functionalist theory views society as an intricate system whose parts work closely to promote stability and solidarity. Functionalist perspective is linked to social solidarity and role differentiation. Based on role differentiation, modern societies offer diverse roles, which are not all equally valued or attractive. They also do not require similar skills, attitudes, or knowledge. Therefore, one of the key functions of schooling is to ensure individuals are capable and adequately trained to assume these different roles. Likewise, social solidarity ensures that there is considerable level of social stability among various persons filling those various roles.
