The Department of Education, parents and educators in South Africa are concerned about
their children as covid -19 cases spike in schools. Covid – 19 pandemic presents major
challenges to our youth especially athletes (soccer, netball, volleyball, and other sporting
codes) in South African schools. Critically discuss the impact of Covid – 19 on our school
athletes and suggest some adaptive and mitigation strategies to reduce its impact on our
school athletes (learners).
COVID-19 restrictions have led to a decrease in the amount and intensity of physical activities among students. Physical activities among athletes decreased at the start of COVID-19 restrictions. Explanations for diminished physical activities included inadequate access to equipment, reduced motivation, and alteration to school and sport procedures. To mitigate the impacts of COVID-19, a learner ought to adapt school items through creativity and innovativeness following the guidance of their teachers to have physical activities within the school compounds following COVID-19 health protocols.
