Outsiders have long neglected and mocked indigenous knowledge, particularly in the African setting. Farming systems across the African continent and most other regions of the world are characterized by the purposeful conservation of variety in domesticated and non-domesticated plants and animals, offering a significant opportunity for systematic in situ maintenance of genetic resources. An expanding worldwide network of regional and national indigenous knowledge resource centers is recording the historical and present indigenous knowledge of a diverse range of ethnic groups worldwide.
