3.2 The physical environment of your classroom contributes greatly to your learners’ ability to learn. Even in an overcrowded classroom with limited resources, there are creative ways to arrange your classroom to ensure that your learners can move around, interact and engage fully in all learning opportunities. Reflect on the statement above under the following headings: (20) 3.2.1 Visibility 3.2.2 Proximity 3.2.3 Accessibility 3.2.4 Safety 3.2.5 Environment
Good classroom arrangement inspires, and encourages children to easily interact with each other and develop various skills including language, and social behavior. Poor classroom physical arrangement may affect children's free movement and can result into social behavior problems.
Visibility - Students need to be arranged in a manner they are visible to the teacher to attract their attentiveness and also be able to see board. They have the potential to help prevent problem behaviors that decrease student attention and diminish available instructional time.
Proximity - A well arranged classroom will enable teacher and student to be near to each other and give them capacity to reach each other easily. Teachers who use effective proximity during a lesson, circulate the classroom while students are working as well as when they are actively instructing.
Accessibility - It should be arranged such that the arrangement encourages interactions. Make interactions accessible to all participants. Ensure physical access to facilities. Arrange instructional spaces to maximize inclusion and comfort.
Safety - The physical environment of your classroom contributes greatly to your learners’ safety. Keeping schools safe allows children to look forward to being in an encouraging environment that promotes social and creative learning. When their basic safety needs aren't met, children are at risk for not feeling comfortable at school and may stop showing up, or they may remain on edge throughout the day.
Environment - Classroom setup is an important component in a learning environment because it is an essential piece of classroom management to support both teaching and learning. The physical atmosphere of the classroom can help prevent behavior issues as well as promote and improve learning.
