The great Alexander had been one of the old rulers of Macedonia and one of the greatest military intellects in history, the greatest empire the ancient world had ever seen as king of Macedonia and Persia. In turn, Alexander inspired this loyalty in his men, who were to be followed anywhere and if necessary die in his process, by charismatic, ruthless, brilliant, power hungry, diplomatic and hungry for blood. Even as Alexander the Great died before he realized that it was a dream of uniting a new realm, the influence of Alexander the Great on Greek and Asian culture was so great that he inspired the Hellenistic period.
