For example we have 2 vectors $\vec{a}$ and $\vec{b}$ and their resultant equals $\vec{c}$. Magnitude of c equals:

$$c = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2 + 2ab \cos \alpha}$$

$\alpha$ – angle between $\vec{a}$ and $\vec{b}$.

c is maximum value if $\cos \alpha = 1 \Rightarrow \alpha = 0$;

So, when they have the same direction they give maximum resultant.
