Answer to Question #80496 in Statistics and Probability for Brian O'Neal

Question #80496
Hypotheses can be written as questions, statements and equality/inequalities. To be truly proficient, you must be able to interpret a hypothesis, regardless of how it is expressed. Write a translation for each and give an example:

a. Explain what each hypothesis in words, state if it is a directional or non-directional, and if it is a null hypothesis or an alternative hypothesis. Give a verbal example of each:
1. μ0 < μ1
• Directional, since < indicates direction
• Alternative hypothesis
• Using a dehumidifier in an extremely humid environment will increase performance on a reaction time task.
2. μ0 > μ1
• Directional, since > indicates direction
• Alternative hypothesis
• Enforced sleep length will increase recall on a recall task.
3. μ0 = μ1
i. No way to determine, since directionality is determined by the alternative hypothesis.
ii. Null hypothesis
iii. There is no difference between the incidence of PTSD systems using drug therapy or eye movement therapy.
