A nominal variable is variable that has two or more categories, but there is no native ordering to the categories. For example, gender (male, female) is a categorical variable having two categories and there doesn't exist native ordering to the categories.

The variable that has a native ordering would be an ordinal variable. For example, language knowledge (low level, medium level, high level) is an ordinal variable having three categories and there exists native to the categories, as high level is higher than medium level and medium level is higher than low level.
