PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS
Question 3 The average lifespan of a Ghanaian is 57years. The average lifespan of males in Ghana is known to be 55 years while the average lifespan of females in Ghana is known to be 60 years. The average lifespan of people from the Northern region of Ghana is known to be 58 years while the average lifespan of people in the East region of Ghana is known to be 54 years. Use the above information to answer the following questions:
(i).With your reasons, discuss all possible population parameters from the above information.
(ii). With your reasons, discuss all possible sample statistics from the above information.
(iii) Compare and contrast the average lifespan of males and females. Which group average is more likely to represent the corresponding population parameter?
Give reasons for your answer.
(i) All possible population parameters from the given information are:
1. The average lifespan of males in Ghana is known to be 55 years.
2. The average lifespan of females in Ghana is known to be 60 years.
3. The average lifespan of people from the Northern region of Ghana is known to be 58 years.
4. The average lifespan of people in the East region of Ghana is known to be 54 years.
Based on these, we can analyze any question. So, these are the possible parameters.
(ii) All possible sample statistics from the given information are:
1. The average lifespan of a Ghanaian is 57years. This can be concluded that the average lifespan of a human is very low as compared to the average global lifespan which is 72 years. So, Ghana is very less developed in the field of healthcare.
2. The average lifespan of males in Ghana is known to be 55 years while the average lifespan of females in Ghana is known to be 60 years. This is found that female life more than a male in Ghana; which is almost the same as the global statistics.
3. The average lifespan of people from the Northern region of Ghana is known to be 58 years while the average lifespan of people in the East region of Ghana is known to be 54 years. This tells us that the quality of living of people living in the Northern region of Ghana is more than that of the Eastern region.
(iii) Comparing the average lifespan of males and females.in Ghana, it is found that females live around 5 years more than males on average in the country. This is somewhat same similar to the global statistics. Global statistics show that the average life of females is 5-7 years more than that of males. Females are more likely to represent the corresponding population parameter. But, that is not the only parameter. many other factors are also responsible. Sex ratio is one of them.
