Negative binomial distribution describes the probability of x trials are made before r successes are obtained.
In particle physics, when 2 highly energetic particle collide, the probability function for having n particles after collision is negative binomial distribution. In biology, when researches count mRNA in a single count, the value of mRNA is distributed according to negative binomial distribution.
The geometric distribution Y is a special case of the negative binomial distribution, with r = 1. It is a number of trials until the first success happened. It can be applied in many real-life situation. For example, some versions of software has a bug, but users have different versions. The number of users that you need to check before finding version with a bug is distributed according to geometrical distribution.
