We can notice, that

$976=16\cdot 61=2^{4}\cdot 61$

61 is a prime number. It is easy to understand, that number of missing pages must be prime divisor of sum of missing pages. It easy to see that it is not 2, as we it is divided by 4, hence it is 61. Answer is: 61 pages are missing.
