Answer on Question #43144 – Math – Other

How much per cent more than the cost price should a shopkeeper mark his goods so that after allowing a discount of 15% on the marked price, he gains 19%.

Solution.

Let the cost price is x. And the sell price is axa * x. After allowing a discount of 15% on the marked price the price is 0.85ax0.85 * a * x. Since, yet he gains 19%, we get 0.85axx=0.19x0.85 * a * x - x = 0.19 * x. Solving this equation, we get

0.85axx=0.19x0.85 * a * x - x = 0.19 * x0.85a1=0.190.85 * a - 1 = 0.190.85a=1.190.85 * a = 1.19a=1.4a = 1.4

Thus, the shopkeeper should mark his goods 40% per cent more than the cost price.
