Answer to Question #132596 in Calculus for Abrianna Salmon

Question #132596
For the following exercises, the position function of a ball dropped from the top of a 200
-meter tall building is given by s(t) = 200 − 4.9t^2 , where position s is measured in
meters and time t is measured in seconds. Round your answer to eight significant digits.
Compute the average velocity of the ball over the given time intervals.

First, set the displacement equation s(t) = 200 - 4.9t2 to 0, and find t, time that the ball traveled.

200 - 4.9t2 = 0

4.9t2 = 200 divide both sides by 4.9 we have;

t2 = 40.81632653061224489

t = 6.38876565 s This is the total time taken for the ball to travel from the top of the building

Now the formula for finding average velocity is given by

Vav = (Total Distance traveled) / Total Time taken

= 200 m / 6.38876565 s

= 31.30495168499 m/s

Therefore, average velocity of the ball is 31.304952 m/s
