How do we determine when a polynomial cannot be factored any further?

Check if there is a common factor. If not, then check the decomposition through Abbreviated Multiplication Formulas. If this is not even the case, then we expand the polynomial through the formula of Horner. We check the resulting roots and now at this stage we see how many factors the given log is decomposed.
